This election was extremely controversial, considered a fraud by EU lawmakers and resulting in violent protests across the country as demonstrators denounced the election as a sham. The main opposition leader, Tundu Lissu of Chama Cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (CHADEMA), was imprisoned on treason charges and the only other serious contender, Luhaga Mpina of the ACT-Wazalendo party, was disqualified on legal technicalities.
